Overview
Main identification features
  • c: angular point
  • mouth short (to under pupil)
  • preopercle: 8-10 spines
  • a: 8; 2nd spine long
Dorsal rays XI + I, 25-26; anal rays II, 8, 2nd spine long; pectoral rays 16-17; pored lateral-line scales 47-49; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 13-15, total 19-22; snout bulbous, projecting well in front of upper jaw; mouth horizontal or only slightly oblique; no barbels on chin; eye 4.2-4.5 in head length; teeth in villiform bands, those in outer row of upper jaw slightly enlarged; margin of preopercle with 8-10 spines, strong at angle; tail margin with blunt central point; soft dorsal and anal fins with scaly sheath.

Color dull brownish with silvery reflections; fins dusky brown.

Size: to about 25 cm.

Inhabits sand bottoms of bays.

Depth: 1-20 m.

Central Mexico to Ecuador.
