Dorsal rays X + I, 24-26; anal rays II, 7, 2nd spine thick and long; pectoral rays 18-20; pored lateral-line scales 48-52; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 9-13, total 18-23; snout scarcely projecting in front of upper jaw; mouth horizontal or only slightly oblique; no barbels on chin; eye 4.5-5.5 in head length; margin of preopercle with about 8-10 spines; second dorsal spine strong, about two-thirds length of third spine; tail margin S shaped or rounded; pectoral fins relatively long, reaching past tips of depressed pelvic fins, but not reaching level of anus; soft dorsal and anal fins with scaly sheath.

Color silvery with dusky scale margins, forming oblique lines; fins dusky brownish, except pelvics sometimes whitish.

Size: grows to 35 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters, including bays and river mouths.

Depth: 1-20 m.

SE Gulf of California to Peru.
