FishBase 1 thumbnail  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features preopercle: 5-7 large teeth a: 7; 2nd spine thick, 80 percent 1st ray c: angular point Dorsal rays XI + I, 22-24; anal rays II, 7, 2nd spine stout, 80% of 1st ray; pectoral rays 17-19; pored lateral-line scales 47-50; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 11-13, total on first arch 17-21; snout bulbous, projecting slightly in front of upper jaw; mouth horizontal or only slightly oblique; no barbels on chin; eye 4.1-4.3 in head length; margin of preopercle with 5-7 spines or serrae; second dorsal spine strong; second anal spine stout, nearly equal in length to first soft anal ray; tail margin with short, blunt central point; pectoral fins relatively short, barely reaching tips of depressed pelvic fins; soft dorsal and anal fins with scaly sheath. Color dull brownish with silvery reflections; fins dusky brown, except pelvics and anal nearly black. Size: attains at least 30 cm. Inhabits sand bottoms of bays, entering estuaries and river mouths. Depth: 1-20 m. The eastern Gulf of California to Colombia. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed.
