Dorsal rays X + I, 21-23; anal rays II, 7, 2nd spine long and thick; pectoral rays 16-18; pored lateral line scales 46-52; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 14-17; snout bulbous, projecting well in front of upper jaw; mouth horizontal or only slightly oblique; no barbels on chin; eye 3.8-4.9 in head length; teeth in villiform bands, those in outer row of upper jaw enlarged; margin of preopercle with about 8-10 spines or serrae, increasing in size ventrally; second dorsal and second anal spines very stout; tail margin with a short to long central point; pectoral fins relatively short, falling well short of tips of depressed pelvic fins; soft dorsal and anal fins with scaly sheath.
Color silvery with dusky scale margins, greyish on upper back; fins dusky except pelvics and anal spines whitish.
Size: to about 30 cm.
Inhabits sand bottoms of bays, abundant in estuaries.
Depth: 1-20 m.
Central eastern Gulf of California to Ecuador.
