Bluish on back, silvery white on sides and belly; upper part of body with narrow dark stripes and scattered blackish spots often present on side; usually a black spot or blotch behind upper rear corner of gill cover; bases of dorsal + tail fins yellow. Reaches 30 cm, common between 12-18 cm. A very common schooling species of herring found over soft bottoms close to shore. Depth: 0-70 m. Southern California to the Gulf of California to Peru and the Galapagos. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed.
