  • lower gill rakers:41-69
  • pectoral not to dorsal fin origin
Body depth 36-38% of standard length; top jaw without notch at front; mouth terminal; teeth small, conical; 2 bones above rear half of top jawbone; 41-69 rakers on central segment of first gill arch; dorsal at about midpoint of body, last ray long and filamentous, but not reaching tail fin; anal fin short, origin well behind dorsal fin; 8 pelvic rays; pectoral short not reaching under dorsal fin belly scutes before and behind pelvics.

Back grey-green; sides silvery white; a black spot immediately behind upper edge of operculum followed by a yellow stripe along upper flank; 1-2 dark spots on top of back under dorsal fin; inner halves of dorsal and tail fins pale yellow, outer halves clear, tail tips may be dusky.

Size: 27.5 cm.

Habitat: coastal pelagic.

Depth: 0-10 m?.

Southern California to the lower 2/3 of the Gulf of California and to Peru.
