Overview
Main identification features Single dorsal fin, rays XI,17; anal rays III,12-13; soft dorsal and anal high, triangular pectoral rays 16-17; gill rakers on first arch 5 + 12; scales very small, about 115- 130 in midlateral series; lateral line strongly arched; mouth small; teeth fused, forming a continuous beak-like structure with a median suture in each jaw; body compressed, deep (depth 1.6-2.1 in standard length); head 2.8-3.1 in standard length; margin of preopercle finely serrate; tail straight.

Black with profuse white spotting, the spots frequently joined to form irregular maze pattern; lower jaw, breast, and belly white; small juveniles pale with six dark bars.

Size: grows to 61 cm.

Inhabits rocky reefs.

Depth: 3-30 m.

Galapagos and Ecuador to Chile.
