Body relatively deep; body depth 2.2-2.4 in standard length; preopercle finely serrated; dorsal rays XII (rarely XIII), 14-15; anal rays III,10-11, second spine longer than third; pectoral long, curved; lateral-line scales 55-60; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 12-14; dorsal and anal fins scaleless.

Silvery grey with oblique orange bands corresponding with scale rows on upper half of side; white on ventral parts; fins whitish to dusky blackish (tail) except pectorals slightly yellow.

Size: grows to 45 cm.

Habitat: usually found over sand or rubble bottoms.

Depth: 0-35 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru, including the Galapagos.
