Main identification features
  • forehead rounded

  • anal fin has 9-11 rays; spines short, 2nd less than 3rd
Elongate (body depth 33% of standard length), strongly compressed; smoothly curved head profile; mouth short, ends before eye; chin with 2 front pores and 2 rear pores in central hole; body scales without small accessory scales; dorsal XII,12, 3rd spine highest; preopercle margin smooth, slightly concave at rear; pectoral long, curved and pointed; anal long base, rays III, 9-11, 2nd spine shorter than 3rd; tail deeply forked; lateral line with 65 scales; 8 scale rows between lateral line and dorsal origin; soft dorsal and anal with small scales between rays.

Silvery grey; orange spots in scale centers give dark lines along scale rows, oblique above lateral line, horizontal below; fins dusky; opercular margin and inner base of pectoral fin black.

Size: 38 cm.

Habitat: demersal on soft bottoms.

Depth: 5-30 m?.

Endemic to the Galapagos.
