Overview
Main identification features Dorsal rays 13-15; anal rays 14-16; pectoral rays 12-13; total gill rakers on first arch 28-34; predorsal scales 28-33; lower jaw projecting in juveniles, but short in adults; pectoral fins (~1/3 of standard length) wing-like, but short for a flying-fish and not reaching level of pelvic fins.

Dark blue to blackish on back and upper side, silvery below; dorsal, caudal, pectoral, and outer half of pelvic fins dusky blackish.

Size: to 22 cm.

Habitat: surface pelagic, oceanic.

Depth: 0-5 m?.

Circumtropical distribution with an Indo-Pacific subspecies; in the eastern Pacific ranging from southern Baja California and the central Gulf of California to Peru and the oceanic islands.
