Elongate, compressed body; head pointed at front when viewed from side; upper profile straight from tip of snout to base of dorsal fin; inner jaw teeth with 3 points; single dorsal fin, far back on body near base of tail; anal fin far back on body, near base of tail; large round tail fin; pelvic fins on abdomen, origin behind pectoral fin; 29-30 lateral scales; male without external sex organ, fertilization is external.
Upper body grey, paling to pearl grey on flanks; top of eyes silvery white; dark brown bars on rear flank in male; outer half of dorsal, anal and tail fins of adults yellow, inner half with network of black and white lines; pelvic fins bright yellow; pectorals pale yellow; dorsal, anal and tail fins of juveniles plain dark grey.
Size: to 35 cm.
Habitat: tidal estuaries and swamps; enter freshwater.
Depth: 0-2 m.
Diet detritus, algae and insects.
Nicaragua to western Panama.
