Overview
Main identification features
  • d: spines only, 1st long
  • dark; dorsal, anal and tail fins - white bars
  • opercle and pectoral base - white spots
Snout blunt; cirri over eye and on nape, nape cirrus palm-like, eye cirrus slender, with 1-5 hairs at tip; opercular spine flattened, its tip pointed to rounded; dorsal fin without segmented rays, XXVI-XXIX spines, 1st spine long; anal II, 16-18; pectoral 12-14; pelvic I, 3; lateral line scales 32-35; broad area of upper back along base of dorsal fin without scales; no scales on pectoral fin base; no skin flaps on scales.

Color variable: pink body & barred anal fin; occasionally 6 bars on body; also uniform dark brown body and fins with white bars on dorsal, anal and tail, and white blotches behind eye and on upper and lower pectoral base; black spot at rear of dorsal fin.

Size: 4.3 cm.

Habitat: rocky coastal shores.

Depth: 0-10 m.

The tip of Baja and Mazatlan (Mexico) to Panama.
