Overview
Main identification features
  • d: last element = ray; black ocellus + ~7 bars
  • dark oblique bar from eye
Dorsal rays XXVII to XXXI, 0-2; anal rays 17-20; pectoral rays 12-14; 3rd pelvic ray small, bound to 2nd; lateral-line scales 31-36; a distinct spine on upper opercle; cirri present on nostril, above eye, and on nape; gap between bases of dorsal spines 3 and 4 less than distance between dorsal spines 1 and 3; first dorsal spine less than 10 percent of standard length; membrane between 3rd and 4th dorsal spines usually attached above midpoint of 4th spine.

Strongly mottled greenish brown, sometimes with 6-7 diffuse bars on side; a prominent dark band below eye; a black ocellated spot on rear half of dorsal fin; dorsal and anal fin with thick dark bars.

Size: reaches 6 cm.

Inhabits shallow weed-covered rocky reefs.

Depth: 0-10 m.

The central Gulf of California to Ecuador, and Cocos and Malpelo.
