Overview

Dorsal rays XXVIII to XXX (no segmented rays); front dorsal spines long; distinct gap between 3rd and 4th spine; anal rays II, 16-20; pectoral rays 12-14; lateral-line scales 32-37; a distinct spine on upper opercle; cirri present on nostril, above eye, and on nape; differs from all other Paraclinus in having membranous flap-like projections on the posterior margins of the scales except those along the lateral line.

Usually mottled reddish brown or greenish brown, with white blotches and flecks; white spots on jaws, an oblique white bar behind eye; sometimes with diffuse dark bars on side; color may also be nearly all white, pinkish, orange or dark brown; a small ocellated spot on posterior half of dorsal fin.

Size: to 6 cm.

Habitat: weedy and rubble bottoms.

Depth: 0-15 m.

Central Baja California and the western and NE Gulf of California.
