Dorsal rays XXVI to XXVIII (no segmented rays); gap between bases of dorsal spines 3 and 4 equal to or greater than distance between dorsal spines 1 and 3; first dorsal spine moderately elevated, more than 10 percent of standard length; membrane between 3rd and 4th dorsal spines attached to base of 4th spine; anal rays II, 16-18; pectoral rays 12-13; lateral-line scales 31-33; a distinct spine on upper opercle; cirri present on nostril, above eye, and on nape.

Reddish brown with whitish blotches and flecks; a broad pale band behind eye and prominent white blotches on pectoral-fin base; a black spot on rear half of dorsal fin; anal fin dark with clear blotches; tail fin clear.

Size: reaches length of 3.5 cm.

Habitat: weedy rocky bottoms.

Depth: 0-15 m.

The tip of Baja and Mazatlan to southern Mexico.
