Overview
Main identification features
  • orange spots head to tail
  • d: 3rd spine longest, 2x 2nd; end soft part convex
  • back - pale oval blotch
  • pectoral: straight lower margin
Body moderately elongate, compressed, back not strongly elevated; forehead profile gently convex; head pointed; preopercle finely serrated; pelvics inserted under or slightly behind pectoral base; mouth large, oblique, ends just before rear edge of eye, lower jaw projects to join snout profile; between eyes relatively wide (~20% of head length in adults), without scales; 16-22 rakers on lower arm of 1st gill arch; dorsal X,12-15, 3rd spine longest, 2X 9th spine & longer than rays, rear margin of soft fin gently convex; tail concave; pectoral long, reaching well beyond tip of pelvic, straight lower margin, 17-19 rays; scales small, rough, 80-88 lateral scales, 9-12 between lateral line and dorsal origin.

Head and upper body dark grey-brown, with orange and brown spots from head to tail, often a pale blotch below soft dorsal; dorsal, tail, anal, pelvics blackish, tail base and fin sometimes with pale bars; pectoral reddish brown. Juvenile with 6-7 dark bars.

Size: 50 cm.

Habitat: rocky bottoms.

Depth: 1-180 m.

Colombia to Peru.
