Dorsal rays IX+I, 23-26; anal rays II,7; pectoral rays 17-18; pored lateral-line scales 49-52; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 6-9, total 13-16; snout bulbous, projecting beyond upper jaw; mouth inferior, moderately oblique; lower jaw with 11-13 pairs of small barbels; eye relatively large, 4.7-5.3 in head length; teeth in villiform bands, none notably enlarged; margin of preopercle without serrations or spines; tail fin S-shaped, the longest rays below middle of fin; pectoral fins equal to or shorter than head; soft dorsal and anal fins with basal scaly sheath.
Color silvery white with 5-6 prominent black bars extending onto lower side + black blotch on top of tail base; pectoral dark; other fins dusky, although pelvics and anal mainly whitish.
Maximum size to about 45 cm.
Inhabits coastal waters.
Depth: 1-30 m.
