Overview
Main identification features
  • blotch behind operculum + 6-7 bars
  • chin: 9-10 pairs barbels
Dorsal rays X+I, 28-29; anal rays II,8-9; pectoral rays 15- 17; pored lateral-line scales 53-55; gill rakers on first arch 8-10, total 12-15; snout bulbous, projecting beyond upper jaw; mouth inferior, slightly oblique; lower jaw with 9-10 pairs of small barbels; eye relatively large, 4.3-5.0 in head length; teeth in villiform bands, those in outer row of upper jaw slightly enlarged; margin of preopercle weakly serrated; tail with short blunt central point; pectoral fins short, 1.5-1.8 in head; soft dorsal and anal fins with basal scaly sheath.

Color silvery white with 6-7 prominent dusky blackish bars extending onto lower side, the anteriormost bar (at level of pectoral fin base) about twice width of other bars; fins dusky, except pelvics and anal whitish; inside operculum dark.

Size: attains at least 30 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters.

Depth: 1-30 m?.

Nayarit in the SE Gulf of California to Peru.
