Body oblong, deep, short; snout overhangs horizontal mouth; top jaw notched, encloses lower; chin with 5 pores, no barbels; preopercle weakly serrated; 16-20 short rakers on 1st gill arch; dorsal fin long based, with deep notch between spiny and soft parts, spiny part a little higher than soft part, rays XII, 37-42; anal fin short based, II, 6-7, 2nd spine ~4/5 length of 1st ray; tail rounded; pectoral short; all scales rough, 59-60 on lateral line.
Silvery dark grey to blackish; body and sides of head with 6-7 dark thin stripes; dorsal and anal with white borders.
Size: 20 cm.
Habitat: rocky.
Depth: 70-100 m.
Southern Mexico.
