Body oblong, elongate, back strongly arched; snout overhangs horizontal mouth; top jaw notched, encloses lower; chin with 5 pores, no barbels; preopercle weakly serrated; 15-17 short rakers on 1st gill arch; dorsal fin long based, with deep notch between spiny and soft parts, X-XIII (IX-XI+I-II) spines, spiny part high, pointed, 35-38 rays; anal fin short based, II, 7-8, 2nd spine thick, ~length of 1st ray; tail with weak angular point; pectoral short; all scales rough, 52-59 on lateral line.
Pale grey-brown to black; body, but not head, with 4 thin black horizontal stripes; fins dusky; iris yellow-brown.
Size: 40 cm.
Habitat rocky.
Depth: 5-60 m.
Colombia to Peru.
