Dorsal rays IX+I, 32-33; anal rays II, 8; pectoral rays 16-18; pored lateral-line scales 50-53; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 6-7, total 16-18; snout blunt, projecting slightly beyond upper jaw; mouth inferior, more or less horizontal; lower jaw or chin without barbels; eye relatively large, 3.0-4.0 in head length; teeth in villiform band, those in outer row of upper jaw distinctly enlarged; margin of preopercle more or less smooth or with very weak serrations; tail fin asymmetrically rounded; second dorsal and anal fins covered with a thick scale sheath.
Color overall charcoal, including fins. Juveniles silvery white 8-9 with undulating black stripes on sides; borders of dorsal and tail fins dark.
Size: to about 30 cm.
Inhabits rocky reefs.
Depth: 3-35 m.
