Overview
Main identification features
  • top jaw protractile
  • pectoral not reaching past anal fin base

Snout short (length < eye diameter), blunt; top jaw protrusible; pectoral fin moderate length, not reaching past anal fin base, 2 unbranched + 11-12 branched rays; lateral line with branch to pectoral base; pelvic short, reaches origin of anal fin ; dorsal 12-14 rays; anal 12-14 rays; 23-30 scale rows; juveniles 2 short chin barbels.

Dark, iridescent green-blue above, silvery white below; dorsal fin clear, with large black blotch at outer tip; pelvics grey; other fins clear except tail with red cast.

Size: 20 cm.

Habitat: coastal pelagic.

Depth: surface, 0-20 m.

An Indo-Pacific subspecies of a circumtropical species; Panama to Ecuador.
