Body slender, compressed; head bluntly pointed, rounded, upper and lower profiles similar; between eyes very narrow (~12% of eye-size), deeply grooved; mouth long, extends to rear of eye, curved up at front, horizontal at rear; tip of tongue forked; pelvics fused in disc; 1st dorsal VII, 5th dorsal spine longest, reaches origin of 2nd dorsal; 2nd dorsal 12-13 rays; anal 12-13 rays; pectoral 20 rays, long, pointed, reaching to 3rd anal ray; tail long (~45% of standard length), blunt; scales large, 30-32 on lateral line; scales on midline before dorsal fin to back of head, body scaled behind level of origin of spiny dorsal; nape and entire belly scaled; breast and pectoral base scaleless.
(Preserved fish) Uniform medium brown, paler ventrally; head a little darker than body; a dark blotch at base of tail; membrane of dorsal, tail and pelvic fins darker than body; pectoral light, with dark base; anal light.
Size: 6 cm.
Habitat: nearshore, soft bottoms.
Depth: 1-10 m.
The northern and eastern Gulf of California to Panama.
