Overview
Main identification features
  • head depressed;wide between eyes
  • flank: 6 diffuse bars
  • tail fin base - diffuse black spot
  • mouth to mid-eye
  • pectoral base - black blotch
  • anal fin and lower c: white borders
Dorsal rays VII + I, 9-12; anal rays I, 11-12; pectoral rays 17; pelvic disc present; head depressed, wide between eyes; mouth reaches to mid-eye; pectorals long, pointed; scales relatively large and mainly rough, midlateral scales 28-34; head scaleless; tail fin with long central point, much longer than head.

Head and back brown, whitish on sides; scales of body with narrow blackish margins; 4-6 diffuse blackish bars on side and large diffuse blackish spot at base of caudal fin; a large prominent black spot on upper half of pectoral fin base; lower margin of tail and anal fins white.

Size: to at least 7 cm.

Inhabits shallow bays and estuaries.

Depth: 1-10 m.

El Salvador to Panama.
