Dorsal rays III, 41-47; anal rays III, 41-42; pectoral rays 22-23; pelvic fins absent; caudal fin strongly forked; total gill rakers on first arch 19; snout longer than eye diameter; body oval, usually not as deep as in P. medius, the depth 1.9-2.7 in standard length; snout larger than eye diameter; dorsal and anal fins shorter and with less pointed tips than in P. medius;very similar to P. simillimus, but with 36 vertebrae.

Silvery white to bluish on back.

Size: attains 39 cm.

Inhabits soft bottoms of coastal areas, including river mouths.

Depth: 0-108 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Ecuador.
