Overview
Main identification features
  • male - eyes wide apart
  • very long 2nd dorsal fin spine

Eyes on left side; space between them concave, wide in male; front of lower eye well before front of upper eye (lower eye entirely before upper in male), serrated ridge above lower eye, stronger in male; mouth small, with double spine on top jaw before nostrils; single series of teeth on each jaw, equally developed on both sides; very small (~1/2 eye diameter) pectoral fin on blind-side; 2nd spine of dorsal fin very long, ribbon-like; pelvic on eye-side only slightly larger than on blind-side, origin behind lower eye, 1st 2 rays greatly elongate in male; scales on eye-side rough, absent between eyes, on snout and jaws, some on middle rays of dorsal and anal, and on tail; blind side scales smooth.

Upper side olive brown, many dark-bordered grey spots; 3-4 dark blotches along lateral line, 5 pairs dark ocelli along dorsal and ventral edges of body, occasional blue skin flaps along lateral line, male with blue spot at base of first 10-12 dorsal rays, plus one at end of snout, tail with 2 inner bars, outer 1/2 dusky; in male blind-side with dark blue-black bar covering ~1/4 of sides, filamentous rays of dorsal and pelvic white, fins speckled, black spot at base of middle tail rays.

Size: 15 cm.

Habitat: benthic, mud and shell bottom.

Depth: 45-160 m.

Central Baja to the central Gulf of California to Colombia.
