PERISTEDION

AMOURED SEA-ROBINS, ARMOURED-GURNARDS

Head and body are flattened below and completely covered in a heavy armor of bony plates and spines; snout extended in a bony two-pointed rostrum; barbels below the lower jaw; no large spines on the preoperculum; dorsal fin divided into separate spiny and soft parts, VIII, 20; anal fin without spines, 20-23; pectoral 11-13 + 2 free rays; pelvic fins wide apart, below base of pectorals, I,5 rays.

About 25 species. Both sides of the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Indo-west Pacific and eastern Pacific. In our area there are four endemic species, two of which are treated here.

Other Species: Peristedion species in our area: P. crustosum (bony plate covering head ends in a broad wing with a right-angled end; spines present on base of snout plates and over nostrils; snout plates short, narrow, widely spaced and parallel; chin barbels long, not branched) is a deep water species (>200m). An undescribed species is known from Cocos Island.
