Overview
Main identification features
  • papillae cover snout
  • ll: front body only
  • tail fin pointed, joins dorsal fin and a
Dorsal rays 82-88; anal rays 62-70; dorsal and anal fins confluent, tail pointed; snout covered with many small fleshy papillae; scales small and imbedded in body and head, about 130-140 in midlateral series; rear margin of preopercle overgrown with skin; no spine on opercle and preopercle; dorsal fin origin above base of pectoral fin; pelvic fins below rear part of head, each consisting of two rays united at the base; lateral line an front of body only.

Generally brown, with dark median fins.

Size: attains 22.6 cm.

Inhabits rocky crevices.

Depth: 3-10 m.

The western Gulf of California to Panama, and Clipperton, Cocos and the Galapagos.
