Elongate, narrowing rearwards to a slender tail base; snout blunt; large eye; barbel under chin; roof of mouth without teeth; 2 dorsal fins, first with short base, second low, with long base; 12-16 rakers on first gill arch, rakers blunt, about as long as pupil, tips not expanded; small black light organ a little before anus on middle of belly; 21-24 pectoral rays; 90-100 lateral scale rows; 6 rows of scales between lateral line and center of first dorsal fin; pelvic longer than head.

Grey-brown, darker at front of head and belly; anal with black margin.

Size: 29 cm.

Habitat: demersal, soft bottoms.

Depth: 0-1270 m.

Central Baja California to the Gulf of California to Peru and the Galapagos.
