Overview
Main identification features
  • very elongate;snout conical, overhanging
  • d: long, low, no notch, dark + blue margin
  • brown, yellow and white stripes
  • large canines front lower jaw
Dorsal rays VII-IX, 31-35; anal rays II, 27-30; pectoral rays 12-13; body very long and slender; no cirri on head; mouth below protruding snout; teeth in jaws close-set and slender except for a very large recurved canine on each side of lower jaw; gill opening on side; dorsal fin very low with elongate base, no notch between spiny and soft parts.

Generally a broad brown midlateral band on side with narrow yellow to white stripe immediately above; dorsal fin blackish, with blue-white outer margin; lower part of head and body white.

Size: reaches 10.2 cm.

Inhabits rocky reefs in 2-20 m.

Depth: 2-25 m.

Southern California to the central Gulf of California to central Peru, and all the offshore islands except Clipperton; stray reach to California.
