Overview
Main identification features
  • eye- no papillae
  • 1st dorsal fin :iii, low
  • 4 dark bars + row white spots
Dorsal rays III + XIV-XVI, 15-17 (total elements 33-34); segmented anal rays 26-28; pectoral rays 13-15 (usually 14); total lateral-line scales 45-48; scales in straight (posterior) part of lateral line 16-17; lateral line deflected ventrally below junction between last dorsal spine and first segmented dorsal ray; first 3 dorsal spines forming isolated or semi- isolated finlet; dorsal finlet low, its height about 40-63% of length in front of dorsal fin; lower lip with 21-33 skin flaps; no scales on preopercle; no papillae on eye.

White with pair of broad blackish bars on middle of side and smaller bars or saddles below dorsal finlet and across base of caudal fin; also about 5 white spots interrupting bars along lower side.

Size: to 5 cm.

Habitat: sandy bottoms.

Depth: 1-15 m.

Costa Rica and Panama.
