Dorsal rays 13, origin a little behind anal fin origin; anal rays 49-51; pelvic fins absent; body relatively deep, its depth about 3.0 in standard length; nape concave; mouth upturned with lower jaw strongly projecting; a small toothed bone (hypo-maxilla) present between rear tip of premaxilla and edge of maxilla; belly with about 27-28 scutes.
Olive on back, silvery white below with silver mid-lateral band in juvenile; fins yellowish.
Size: attains 23 cm.
Habitat: coastal seas, possibly entering brackish estuaries.
Depth: 0-10 m?.
Southern Baja and the SE Gulf of California to Ecuador.
