POECILIOPSIS

TOOTHCARPS, LIVEBEARERS

Body elongate, compressed; head depressed; mouth small, transverse; teeth in 2 series or bands, depressable, the outer ones larger, slightly compressed; male sex organ long (reaches to or nearly to the base of the tail fin) and slender, with few or no spines and other ornaments.

This neotropical genus, which includes 21 species of primarily freshwater fishes, occurs in Pacific and Atlantic drainage streams between the southern US and Colombia. Five Pacific species enter brackish water habitats.
