Body elongate (depth ~29% of standard length), upper head profile straight; head small, rounded; eye 1/3 of head length; mouth small, relatively narrow, with small side clefts; outer series of teeth larger; 15-22 rakers on 1st gill arch; dorsal fin I, 6-7, origin over last rays of anal fin; pectoral about as long as head, generally not reaching to middle of pelvic fin; anal fin II+ 6-8, rounded; fins larger in male; male sex organ long ( ~2X head length), with ~16 hooks along the rear edge of the shaft, tip of shaft curved forward; scales smooth, 27-30 in lateral series, 7 rows above lateral line.

Both sexes olive above, grey below; 6-10 well defined dark bars on flanks of front 3/4 of body; dark line along midline from anal fin to tail fin; fins plain dusky, or pelvics tinged with yellow; males with yellow belly.

Size: reaches 9 cm (males are much smaller than females).

Habitat: lives in fresh, brackish and saltwater, in coastal lagoons and rivers.

Depth: 0-5 m.

Ranges from Mexico (Jalisco) to Colombia.
