POLYDACTYLUS

BOBOS, THREADFINS

Elongate, compressed; snout short, conical, translucid, overhangs mouth; mouth moderate, below, with bottom lip but no top lip; eyes large, with fatty cover, at front of head; preopercle smooth; two well separted; dorsal fins; tail forked; pectoral divided in two sections, lower section under gills with 5-9 long free rays, upper section with normal fin; pelvics under dorsal; scales rough.

This genus of about 15 species is circumtropical. Two species are endemic to the tropical eastern Pacific.
