Body high, compressed; forehead profile ~oblique; mouth short, not reaching past front of eye; chin with 2 pores at front and 2 inside hole behind; preopercle serrated, larger teeth at angle ; teeth small, conical, in bands; 19-20 rakers on first gill arch; dorsal XIII, 11-12, spinous part high; anal III, 7, 2nd spine very long, thicker than 3rd; pectorals short, not reaching tips of pelvics, 16-17 rays; scales rough, 45-48 longitudinal series, 6 rows between lateral line and 6th dorsal spine, none between fin rays.

Color: Silvery; juveniles with about 5 indistinct bars on body

Size: 21 cm.

Habitat: estuaries and freshwater.

Depth: 0-20 m.

Costa Rica.
