  • preopercle finely serrated

POMADASYS

GRUNTS

Chin with 2 pores at front and 2 inside hole behind; preopercle weakly or not serrated, ventral serrations not forward pointing; mouth moderate size, inside not red, lips not fleshy; anal 2nd spine much longer and thicker than 3rd, 7-8 rays; no scales between dorsal and anal fin rays.

A circumtropical genus with 36 species, found in the east and west Atlantic and west Pacific as well as the tropical eastern Pacific, where it is represented by 5 endemics.
