Body compressed, back high and narrow; head deep, compressed, profile straight; snout long, pointed; mouth relatively short, slightly oblique, barely reaches eye, less than 1/3 head length; 14 short gill rakers on lower limb of first arch; vertical edge of preopercle serrated, those at angle further apart and larger, horizontal edge straight; dorsal rays XII, 12-13, 4th spine longest, a deep notch between spines and rays; pectoral fins very long, reaching to level of anus; anal rays III,7, second anal spine long, robust and curved, reaches ends of longest anal rays, 57% of head length; tail fin slightly concave to nearly straight; scales slightly rough, 6 rows between lateral line and first dorsal spine; lateral- line scales 47; no scales on membranes of dorsal and anal fins.
Overall silvery; a blue-black blotch on the upper operculum; faint dark bars at nape and before dorsal fin.
Maximum size, 22 cm.
Habitat: coastal seas on sandy or muddy bottoms, entering brackish estuaries and river mouths.
Depth: ~20 m.
Known only from southern Ecuador and northern Peru.
Very similar to P. macracanthus.
