Overview
Main identification features
  • head and body spotted; back: 6-7 saddles
  • dorsal fin has 9-10 rays blotches
  • c: dark border
Dorsal rays II + 32-37; anal rays 29-33; 6-9 rakers on lower limb of first gill arch; last dorsal and anal rays separate from tail fin; head and body scaleless; a sharp, non-venomous spine on upper rear corner of gill cover; four lateral lines with conspicuous rows of photophores; lower side lateral line ends before light-organ line.

Bronze-coloured with 6-7 dark brown saddles, blotches, and spots on upper part of head and body; 9-10 blotches on outer dorsal fin; tail border dark.

Size: to 19 cm.

Inhabits sand or mud bottoms of trawling grounds.

Depth: 5-140 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to northern Peru, the Galapagos.
