Overview
Main identification features Dorsal rays X,12-14 (usually 13); anal rays III,13-14 (usually 14); pectoral rays 17-19 (usually 18); lateral-line scales 65-79; scale rows between lateral line and dorsal fin origin 10-13; rakers on first gill arch 19-23; head not symetrical (mouth opens above midline); pelvic fins relatively short, usually less than head length; no large flat spine at angle of preopercle, its rear edge scaly; tail with W-shaped rear border.

Overall crimson, including fins and iris of eye; membranes of pelvic fin black; no dark spotting on fins.

Size: to 32 cm.

Inhabits rocky bottoms.

Depth: 10-275 m.

Hawaiian Islands and tropical eastern Pacific; in the latter region it is the Revillagigedos Islands and Alijos rocks west of southern Baja.
