Head large, with steep profile; dorsal rays X/12; anal rays 10-11; lateral-line scales about 75-80; center of radiation of bony ridges on cheek without a spine; no transverse groove across top of head behind eyes; pectoral fins relatively long, reaching to middle of anal fin; snout concave, with prominent spines on front projection at each side.

Generally grey brown upper, abruptly white belly, with orange stripe along junction; throat and gill region orange; outer three-fourths of first dorsal fin black; pectoral fin blackish with blue-white margin; tail fin with dark blotches, white margin.

Size: reaches 30 cm.

Inhabits sand-rubble bottoms in the vicinity of rocky reefs.

Depth: 20-30 m.

Galapagos Islands.
