  • mouth long
  • d: black outer spot
  • preopercular crest: 1 smooth rear spine
  • pectoral: free rays short, fin very long, black
  • tail fin and 2nd dorsal fin : spotted
Dorsal rays X + 12; anal rays 11; lateral-line scales 50-55; center of radiation of bony ridges on cheek without a spine; one smooth spine at rear of preoperculum; no transverse groove across top of head behind eyes; pectoral fins relatively long, reaching below middle of second dorsal fin, free rays relatively short; mouth long, rear margin of jaw reaching slightly beyond level of front of eye; about eight well developed rakers on lower limb of first gill arch.

Grey brown, underside white; pectoral fins a strongly contrasted black; a black spot on outer part of dorsal fin between fourth and fifth spines; second dorsal and caudal fin with rows of blackish spots.

Size: attains at least 43 cm.

Inhabits sand rubble bottoms.

Depth: 2-255 m.

Southern Baja California and the Gulf of California to Peru, Malpelo and the Galapagos.
