Overview
Main identification features
  • d: 1st spine serrated, 2 dark stripes
  • c: 3 dark bars
  • preopercular crest: rear serrated

Head not flattened, medium length (43% of standard length); nape short (14% of standard length); snout plates very short, bluntly serrated at front; rear of preopercular crest serrated, without supplementary spine; no spines on snout or under eye; eyes prominent but not elevated, between eyes narrow (~2 eye diameter), concave; 7 rakers on 1st gill arch; pectoral 13+3 rays- fin very long, reaches past anal base, upper free ray long (almost as long as fin, 1/2 standard length); dorsal X,12, 1st spine serrated, base of 1st ray serrated; anal 11 rays; tail edge straight; pelvics medium length (29.5% of standard length).

First dorsal with dusky stripes along middle and outer margin; second dorsal with dark outer and rear margins; tail with 3 dark bars; anal clear, rear margin dusky; pectoral fin uniformly dark, free rays dark or barred.

Size: 15 cm.

Habitat: sand-mud bottoms.

Depth: 20-60 m?.

Costa Rica and Panama.
