Overall grey with numerous small black spots covering head and body, tail fin bright yellow; a dark- edged whitish bar on head behind eye; juveniles with two color varieties: overall yellow or similar to adults.
Size: grows to 60 cm.
Habitat: common along rocky shores, usually seen in schools.
Depth: 0-30 m.
Northern Gulf of California to NW Costa Rica, plus the Revillagigedos Islands.
