Overview
Main identification features Deep oval body; dorsal rays X,10-12 (usually 10), center spines larges; anal rays III,10; pectoral rays 17-18; large scales; lateral-line scales 45-51; scale rows between lateral line and dorsal fin origin 11-13; rakers on first gill arch 23- 25; preoprecle without spines scaley; pelvic fins rounded, usually about equal or less than head length; tail rounded.

Dark silvery red, including fins and iris of eye; outer part of pelvic fins blackish; young specimens with several faint pale bars on sides.

Size: grows to 33 cm.

Inhabits rocky bottoms.

Depth: 3-200 m.

Oregon to Chile, including the central and southern Gulf of California, the Galapagos , Cocos and Revillagigedos.
