Overview
Main identification features
  • white, small black spots + clusters of large black spots
  • pectoral ~eye
Tail tip a hard, finless point; body moderately elongate, cylindrical; head and trunk slightly longer than tail; snout conical, a short groove on underside; dorsal fin origin behind level of gill opening; pectoral fin very tiny, smaller than or equal to eye; teeth pointed, uniserial.

White with numerous small black spots; at regular intervals there is a yellowish ground color, the dark spots are longer and darker, forming about 15 crossbars.

Size: grows to about 71 cm.

Habitat: sand, rubble and rocky bottoms.

Depth: 3-30 m.

Galapagos, Malpelo and Cocos Islands.
