Overview
Main identification features
  • disc wide, front borders concave
  • wings pointed
  • rows thorns: 1 back, 3 tail
  • pectoral: large ocellus
Rhomboidal disc of flattened, pointed head, body and pectoral fins; disc wide (width = 70-80% of total length); front of disc concave; tips of "wings" pointed; pelvic fins with 2 distinct lobes, rear one large; large spiracles behind eyes; snout rigid; spines on rear borders only of ventral side; 2 small dorsal fins at rear of tail, no tail fin; disc totally covered with small, thin, grooved spines, with oval bases, larger on snout, along front border of disc, and before, above & behind eye; 1 row of thorns along midline, from a little behind eye to dorsal fins on tail, 2 rows along sides of tail.

Grey to brown above, snout & spines translucent; belly white, borders darker; a large, well defined ocellus (black with 5 yellow spots in center) in center of each pectoral fin

Size: 83 cm.

Habitat: sandy & muddy bottoms.

Depth: 35-300 m.

The lower 3/4 of the Gulf of California to Peru, the Galapagos and Malpelo.
