Click on image to enlarge. © Copyright Photographer/SFTEP, 2002 · 0 Roncador stearnsii 2 thumbnails  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features oblong; snout blunt, overhangs horizontal mouth pectoral base: black blotch a: 2nd spine slender Body elongate, high; mouth under overhanging blunt snout; molar teeth inside throat; chin with 5 pores, no barbel; preopercle finely serrated; 24-28 rakers on 1st gill arch; dorsal low, XI, 24-28, with deep notch between spiny and soft parts; anal I,8, 2nd spine slender, ~3/4 length 1st ray; pectoral 16-17 rays, pointed, longer than pelvic; tail truncate; all scales rough, 48-54 lateral line scales; soft dorsal and anal without scales. Blue grey to metallic grey above, sides brassy, belly pale silvery grey; sides with faint undulating lines along scale rows; pectoral fin with large black blotch on outer base, dark inner base; gill chamber blackish. Size: 68.6 cm. Habitat: demersal on sandy bottoms of bays, in surf zone, often near rocks. Depth: 1-22 m.
