SARGOCENTRON

SQUIRRELFISHES

Body ovate, deep; mouth small, oblique; snout pointed; eye very large; edges of bones of operculum and under eye with series of slender spines, 1-2 enlarged spines on edge of operculum, a long stout spine at corner of preopercle; dorsal fin with XI spines, continuous although deeply notched between last 2 spines; anal with IV spines, 3rd spine extremely long and stout; tail forked; scales large, very rough.

A pantropical genus of 32 species. There is one species, a regional endemic, in the tropical eastern Pacific.
