Overview
Main identification features
  • nape humped
  • green-brown body; blue fins and beak
Dorsal rays IX, 10; anal rays III, 9; pectoral rays 14-16; median predorsal scales 5; 2 rows of scales on cheekeach with 4-5 (usually 5) scales; tail fin slightly rounded; large individuals developing prominent hump on forehead.

Overall green to bluish green with dark blue fins; dark spoke-like lines radiating from eye; beak blue. Juvenile tan, tail base and fin yellowish; blue lines radiating from eye, blue edging to fins, beak blue.

Size: attains a length of 80 cm.

Habitat: usually seen grazing on rocky reefs in small aggregations.

Depth: 1-20 m.

SW and NE of California to northern Peru, and the Galapagos and Malpelo.
